Kate marries and the end of world war two. Because of his handicap Simon has a low self esteem and little confidence. When he qualifies and sets up in his accountancy business he repays her by showing how confident he has become of having affairs and then constantly mentally abusing her.

After many years of marriage and four children later Kate feels wretched. By chance she meets Paul. They fall in love. Both have endured unhappy marriages. Simon requests to meet Paul on the pretense he needs to see who will be bringing up his children. Kate is thunderstruck when Simon gives his approval of her choice of future partner. But he's in control as usual, and taking down a path of false security.

When Kate becomes pregnant with triplets, Simon makes his move to end that relationship........ and succeeds leaving Kate vulnerable and helpless. It is then he employs a young married mother as a housekeeper along with her child and then proceeds to punish Kate for her affair in an appalling and mind controlling manner........... But Kate picks herself up, gets a job and tries to find accommodation without success. After two years she leaves him and sets up home on her own.

Her children quickly join her. She accidentally comes across Paul during her lunch break and they have a drink and chat. She nearly passes out when he tells her his wife has dies, and he has been looking for her for two years so they could marry. She mistakenly thought he was as free as her. But he had married a women 25 years his junior. Kate was devastated as the realisation hit her that he would now never be hers. They met up again when two of his children requested to see him, and from that point they conducted a mental affair that has never really ended.
